La Yerba from Nayarit, Mexico - NEW SINGLE ORIGIN
We are thrilled to introduce our latest single-origin offering: La Yerba from Nayarit, Mexico. Grown on the northern slopes of the San Juan Volcano, this exceptional coffee reflects the rich agricultural heritage of the La Yerba community.
About La Yerba
La Yerba is a small community situated on the northern side of the San Juan Volcano in the Nayarit State of Mexico. Originally founded as El Astal, the town was relocated in 1969 to border a highway and renamed La Yerba as part of a newly formed Ejido. The community, now integrated by 35 "Ejidatarios" with a total of 786 inhabitants, relies heavily on its two main crops: coffee and avocados. With one harvest immediately following the other, farmers have guaranteed income for only a few months each year.
Grupo Terruño Nayarita (GTNAY), founded in 2015, is an enterprise that delivers consistently high-quality, socially and environmentally responsible, internet-traceable coffee from Mexico. GTNAY’s stockholders, including the Cafetaleros El Astal society in La Yerba, are independent democratic coffee-producing societies spread throughout Nayarit, agreeing to implement best practices and not compete with each other.
Cultivation and Processing
The coffee from La Yerba is grown in volcanic soil at an altitude of 956 meters above sea level. Farmers cultivate their coffee alongside avocados, showcasing the region's dedication to sustainable agriculture. With the support of San Cristobal Coffee Importers, which has worked with the Cafetaleros El Astal society for the last eight years, and CAFESUMEX, the farmers receive price adjustments based on the quality and sale price of their coffee, providing additional income months after the initial harvest.
Tasting Notes
La Yerba is a smooth, easy-drinking coffee with tasting notes of peach and caramel. Its natural processing enhances these flavors, resulting in a delightful cup that balances sweetness and acidity. The smooth body and delicate flavors make it ideal for pour-over brewing. Enjoy this sweet, natural-process coffee black or with a splash of milk.
Brewing Recommendations
To fully appreciate the nuanced flavors of La Yerba, we recommend brewing it as a pour-over. Use 20 grams of coarsely ground coffee and hot water at 199 degrees Fahrenheit. This method highlights the coffee's unique profile, making it a great option for experimentation, even as an espresso.
